About Our Faculty

Fırat University Faculty of Science was established under the Law No. 1873  in 1975. The Faculty Board conducted its first meeting on 22nd of October in 1975. At the first meeting, a decision was made to establish the Department of Biology, Department of Physics, Department of Statistics, Department of Chemistry, Department of Mathematics, Department of Earth Sciences and Department of Astronomy under the Faculty of Science.

Department of Mathematics accepted 65 students and started teaching, for the first time, in the academic session 1975/1976. It was foreseen that the Department of Chemistry would start teaching as the Department of Chemistry Engineering and the Department of Biology would start teaching as the Department of Botany and Zoology. 
 
In the academic session 1976/1977,  the Department of Chemistry Engineering began teaching by 20 students and the Department of Biology began teaching by 20+20 students. Department of Physics Engineering and Department of Geological Engineering were opened in educational session 1977-1978 and each of these departments accepted 20 students.
 
The Department of Biology was divided into two programs (The Department of  Botany and The Department of Zoology) on 4th of  1978. Then, the Faculty of Science had sustained its education with six departments which were the Department of Botany, the Department of Mathematics, the Department of Zoology, the Department of Physics Engineering, the Department of Geological Engineering and the Department of  Chemistry Engineering.  
 
The Faculty of Science was merged with the Faculty of Literature and they were transformed to "Faculty of Science and Literature" with the approval of the change of Decree No. 41 about the Organization of Higher Education Institutions and with the law No. 2809 dated 28/03/1983.
 
After closing the Department of Physics Engineering within the Faculty of Science and also closing  the Department of Geological Engineering, the Department of Chemical Engineering within the Faculty of Engineering; Department of Chemistry and Department of Physics was opened within the Faculty of Engineering.
 
The Department of Statistics had recieved 40 students and started teaching in academic session 2005/2006. The Faculty of Science and Literature was closed upon the Council of Ministers'  decision Law No. 2010/175 published in an official government journal No. 27518  dated 11th of March 2010. Upon the closure of the Faculty of Science and Literature, instead of it, the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences has been founded.
 
The major field of studies and programs which were within the Faculty of Science and Literature were decided to be kept under the newly established Faculty of Science. The decision of transferring departments  was examined and was accepted by the Law Article 7/d-2 at the meeting of the Council of Higher Education dated 07/04/2010 changing the Law No. 2547 with the Law No. 2880.
 
Currently, the  Faculty of Science sustains its academic activities by six departments which are the Department of Biology, the Department of Physics, the  Departmant of Chemistry, the Department of Mathematics, the Department of Statistics and the Department of Actuarial Sciences.
